The three most important factors to help boost your brain power are doing new things, being physically active, and getting the proper fuel delivery.  The source of the fuel comes from water, food, sunlight, and oxygen.

Novelty activities, or doing new things, can be done everyday.  Brush your teeth with your left hand. Take a new route to work.  Join a new group or start a new hobby. You can even learn a new language.  If you have retired, these activities are even more important because after you stop working, you are not required to use your brain as much.

Being physically active is vital to boost your brain power.  Find something you love to do that keeps you active. If you do not like going to the gym, it will be hard to keep up that habit.  If you enjoy it, you are more likely to stay active. Also, sitting is the worst thing for your brain. You should not sit for more than one straight hour.  Always get up and walk around, stretch, get a drink of water, or do some breathing exercises. It does not have to be long, but make sure you get up.

In addition to moving your body and doing new things, it is also important to properly fuel the brain. One aspect of fuel that is necessary is water. To drink the right amount of water, simply drink half your body weight in ounces.  Also, drink from a glass or stainless steel bottle to reduce plastic exposure, help the environment, and save lots of money. The best times to drink water are first thing in the morning, 30 minutes before each meal, and right before bed.  In regards to nutrition, the brain loves fruits, vegetables, fish, lean meat, eggs, nuts, and seeds. There are certain foods that cause inflammation to the brain that may lead to depression, memory problems, anxiety, anger, fatigue, headaches, pain, and brain fog.  These foods are dairy, wheat, soy, corn, alcohol, and sugar.

The most important vitamin for nutrition to the brain and body is Vitamin D.  That comes from the sun and helps to fuel your brain and body. I recommend going out in the sun for at least 20 minutes a day between the hours of 12 noon and 2 pm.  Remember to take off your hat, rolls up your sleeves, pull your pant legs up, and take off your sunglasses to get full skin exposure.

Something that most people don’t think about too much, but is a key factor to boost your brain power is oxygen.  A good breathing exercise is to inhale for 4 seconds, hold it for 7 seconds, and exhale for 8 seconds. That helps to maximize oxygen intake and also get rid of carbon dioxide.  If the body has too much carbon dioxide and not enough oxygen that can lead to headaches, dizziness, low energy, lack of motivation, or depression

To summarize, to keep the brain and body healthy, it is vital to do new things, be physically active, drink the proper amount of water, eat healthy food, and go outside to get sunlight and oxygen. All of these things may seem obvious and you might already know them. However there is a difference between knowing what is healthy and doing what is healthy.
