Spring is here.  The flowers are starting to bloom.  The grass is growing.  High schoolers are taking their SATS.  Finals are almost here.  It is time for spring cleaning.  Let’s take this time, not only to clean your closet and your desk, but also clean your brain and your body.  If you function better you will feel better.

There are many ways to cleanse your body.  You can do a water fast.  This means that you only drink water and eat absolutely nothing.  I recommend you do this for 48 hours straight to get the best effect.  If you do this, it is important to be safe.  Do not do this when you have to work and have many tasks that need your attention.  The ideal time to do this is when you can just relax and not use up to much energy.  Remember that food is needed for energy so if you are fasting, you may feel weak mentally and physically.  

Another type of fast that is really easy and effective is a simple fruit and vegetable fast.  You can eat as much as you want, but you can only eat organic fruits and vegetables.  I personally like this one because I have lots of work and family responsibilities as well as being extremely physically active where I need a ton of physical and mental energy.  This is also great for variety.  As long as you eat each color of the rainbow each day, you will ensure you get all the nutrients you need.  Make sure you also go out in the sun to get your Vitamin D as well.  You can have smoothies, salads, purees, soups, and also have fun with zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash, and cauliflower rice. You can do this cleanse for 3 days, 5 days, 2 weeks, or even one month.  People say that they feel better, think better, have better skin, sleep better, and have more energy.

One last type of body cleanse is called the master cleanse.  This cleanse is made with water, organic lemon, cayenne pepper, and Grade B Maple Syrup.  You can do this do for a similar amount of time as the fruit and vegetable fast.  In my opinion it is good to transition into the fruit and vegetable fast after you perform the master cleanse.  That way the body and digestive system can adjust to breaking down whole foods again before eating tough proteins like animal products.  There are many benefits to this cleanse.  People lose a lot of weight.  People detox from sugar, caffeine, processed foods, and many of the horrible chemicals, hormones, and medications that in today’s current food supply. The also get less brain fog and their mood improves.  With this fast you can perform daily activities of work and play.  The maple syrup keeps your glucose levels in homeostasis so there are no up and downs of energy.

These are only 3 types of body cleanses, but there are many more.  In my opinion it is also good to cleanse yourself of social media.  Try and go 3 days without checking Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat.  Cleanse yourself of the media and news.  Try and go 3 days without CNN, Fox, NY Times, and the internet.  Keep reading the Pascack Press though.  Try and go 3 days without talking to negative people in your life.  You can even try a 3 day cleanse of caffeine and sugar just to prove to yourself you can do it.  These cleanses will reboot your brain and your body.  It is all about improving the quality of life and being happy and healthy.  You deserve to sleep better, have more energy, think better, and smile more.  Happy Spring Cleaning to ALL!
